Earwax, also known as cerumen, is produced inside your ears to keep them clean and free of germs. Earwax (or medically known as cerumen), is the yellowish/orange substance which naturally is produced from the glands inside the ear canal.
The amount of ear wax that the body produces differs from person to person, the amount that is retained within the ear also differs for each of us – these differences are for a number of reasons:
* Age
* Lifestyle
* Personal anatomy
* Genetics
* Ethnicity
* Diet
One of the biggest causes of ear wax blockages is when people attempt to self-clean their ears with a cotton bud for example, pushing the ear wax further into the ear causing it to compress against the eardrum, making the blockage worse. People who wear hearing aids all day and wear ear plugs at night over a sustained period stop the wax from naturally falling out, eventually causing a buildup.
A Build-up of earwax in your ear can cause:
Hearing loss, earache, tinnitus, itchiness in or around the ear, a spinning sensation, dizziness & ear infections.
Due to the current pandemic it’s our clinic’s policy that clients should wear a mask in the waiting area and during the treatment.
We have been working hard to introduce additional safety measures to ensure the welfare of our staff and patients at all times during this uncertain time: We will ask you to complete a COVID-19 questionnaire prior to your appointment, on arrival we will ask you to wear a mask, sanitise your hands.
Our Practitioners will be wearing PPE so they will be wearing protective masks, gloves and aprons.
Please keep to your appointment time so we can minimize the number of people in our clinic.We have enhanced our cleaning schedule so areas you use will be sanitized between each patient. Where possible we ask you to make payments by card.

Ear wax, medically known as cerumen, is a natural substance produced by glands inside the ear canal. It plays a very important role in keeping your ears healthy. Ear wax protects the ear canal by trapping dust, bacteria, and other small particles, preventing them from reaching the eardrum. It also has antibacterial properties and helps to lubricate the skin inside the ear.
In most people, ear wax naturally moves out of the ear canal on its own. However, in some cases, wax can build up and become impacted. This may happen due to narrow ear canals, excessive wax production, frequent use of earphones or hearing aids, or attempts to clean the ears using cotton buds. When wax becomes impacted, it can block the ear canal and cause discomfort or hearing problems.
Excess ear wax can cause a variety of uncomfortable and sometimes worrying symptoms. The most common sign is reduced or muffled hearing, which may feel like your ear is blocked. Some people describe it as hearing through water or having pressure inside the ear.
Other symptoms may include:
Earache or discomfort
Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ears)
Dizziness or balance issues
Itching inside the ear canal
A feeling of fullness or pressure
Coughing triggered by ear irritation
Hearing aids not functioning properly
If you experience any of these symptoms, it is advisable to book a professional ear examination to determine whether ear wax build-up is the cause.
Microsuction is a modern and clinically approved method used to safely remove excess ear wax. It is widely considered the gold standard technique for ear cleaning in the UK and is recommended by many healthcare professionals.
During microsuction, a trained audiologist uses a gentle medical suction device while viewing the ear canal through a specialised microscope. This allows for precise and controlled removal of wax without the need for water. Because the clinician can clearly see inside the ear throughout the procedure, it significantly reduces the risk of injury and improves overall safety.
Unlike traditional ear syringing, microsuction does not flush the ear with water, which makes it cleaner, quicker, and suitable for patients with perforated eardrums or previous ear surgery.
Yes, microsuction is considered one of the safest methods for ear wax removal when carried out by a qualified and experienced professional. The procedure allows the clinician to have a clear, magnified view of the ear canal and eardrum at all times, which greatly reduces risks.
Before treatment begins, a full ear examination is carried out to ensure it is safe to proceed. If any abnormalities are found, such as infection or eardrum perforation, appropriate advice or referral will be given.
Most patients tolerate microsuction very well and experience immediate relief from symptoms after treatment.
Microsuction is generally painless. Most patients report only mild sensations, such as a gentle suction sound or slight pulling feeling inside the ear. The sound may seem loud because it occurs inside the ear canal, but this is completely normal.
If at any time you feel uncomfortable, you can ask the clinician to pause the procedure. The treatment is performed carefully and slowly to ensure maximum comfort and safety.
